Pics here and here. Bikes on the radio Martin Wilson writes with news of "The Climb" By Lance Woodman, an afternoon play on BBC Radio 4: "A drama-documentary which follows two competitive cyclists as they face the biggest challenge of their sport, the hill climb. Jazz star Soweto Kinch talks about a similar challenge experienced by musicians as they improvise. Music by Soweto Kinch; producers Peter Leslie Wild and Rosie Boulton.". Listen again here. New velomobile in the works via ligfiets.net comes news of a new velomobile under development. The 'Celeris' is revealed on the german-language Velomobile forum and pics are also on the Gentse Liggers (Belgium) forum. A rideable prototype is expected in around four weeks, weight should be around 30 kg, and price around 6000 Euros. Bicycle musical triplet Christian Perroteau writes with the following two items:
Human Power boat champs coming up Andreas Schlief writes: Next HPB World Championships in Rostock, August 17.-19. Info: www.hpb-championships.org/2007/ HPV Boat 24h record broken Press release New World Record - 107.9 Miles in 24 Hours by Human Powered Boat Calgary, Alberta (PRWEB) July 3, 2007 -- Canadian Greg Kolodziejzyk set a new world record by pedaling his human powered pedal boat 107.9 miles in 24 hours. Kolodziejzyk surpassed the record set in 2000 of 168.43 kilometers or 105 miles by Ironman World Champion and US cycling hall of fame member John Howard. The new record is 107.9 miles (173.76 kilometers) that was closely monitored by officials from the International Human Powered Vehicle Association. Greg's next record attempt will be a 3000-mile crossing of the Atlantic by human-powered boat. Copyright-free photographs of the 24 hour human powered boat record attempt and the Trans Atlantic human powered boat can be downloaded here and more information about Greg can be found at his web site adventuresofgreg.com. UPDATE Andreas Schlief points out that the Trieste Waterbike Team covered 176.8 km in 24h in 1995 - see here for pictures - and this was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. However, that was set using a three-man crew, whereas Greg pedalled solo. Unfortunately the records list at the IHPVA website is only updated to Feb 2003, but it does recognise separate solo and multiple rider categories. Momentum now free to download Ron Ritchings writes that Momentum, the Vancouver magazine "for self-propelled people" is now available as a free download at www.momentumplanet.com. Future and back issues will also be made available online. Well worth a read for its fresh take on cycling. HP Velotechnik win manufacturing prize and expand Recumbent makers HP Velotechnik recently won the 'Best Manufacturer' prize from German trade organisation VSF for the second year in a row. Their flexible production system and good supplier relationships were particularly rated. HP Velotechnik also moved into a new production facility in Kriftel, Germany, in April to accommodate increasing demand. Folding handlebars win design award A design for adding folding handlebars to bikes is one of the winners of the BSI Sustainability Design Awards 2007: pics and more info here. Trailers on Make Marcus Smith writes to note that this page on the 'Make' website shows the Carryfreedom bamboo trailer and also a good number of home-built trailers from readers... including one 'caravan' type... Shaft-drive folders Peter de Lange writes to mention Beixo, a range of shaft drive folding bikes from the Netherlands. Posted on 6 July 2007
