Riding on the motorway :Ø)

It is not every day your local highway authority lets you ride along the motorway so you have to take the chance when you can.

A new stretch of motorway is due to be opened this week near to the German/Danish border. On Saturday the local authority organised a 10km run along the motorway and 10,000 people turned up to run.

On Sunday it was the turn of the bikes but this time it was a 48km ride. Very well organised with plenty of drink and feed stops. The entry was £5 (equivalent) and all the drinks, fruit, energy bars and support vehicles, were free. Wonderful weather and extremely well organised. It was so hot the members of the public who turned up to watch were sheltering under the motorway bridges to get out of the sun.

I took my Kickbike and not surprisingly I was the only one there with one.

Shame the cars will take over now! I've heard of one or two of these sort of events here in the UK but sadly haven't yet been in the right place at the right time to participate in one. It's quite liberating cycling on a car-free road - the only similar experience I had was taking part in a cycle ride around our local motor-racing circuit last Summer.

My other recent experience of cycling on the road in the way one usually shouldn't was turning on to the road off the Bristol-Bath cycle path last Saturday, realised when I saw a Police car coming the other way on the r.h. side of the road we were going the wrong way down a one-way system! We ducked straight off the road so thankfully the police driver just smirked at us for our stupidity.

Is that the Bath end where it goes along the riverside? There is a contraflow bike lane there.

Yes, I know the stretch you mean, but no this was further East just where the path joins Broad Quay.
