the ferry from Hull to Holland costs me ?212, return, cabin, no meals.

The ferry from Newcastle to Holland would cost me ?196, return, cabin, no meals.

Now for the Grrr!!.

From Harwich to Holland would cost me ?124, return, cabin, no meals.

From Harwich to Holland crossing in the day time, about ?66.

?196 sounds like a bargain to me - I have just bought a return ferry ticket (cabin, no meals) from North Shields (which is NOT Newcastle, whatever DFDS might say) to IJmuiden (which is even less Amsterdam - has anyone at DFDS ever looked at a map) and return - ?226 - I must be travelling on the wrong days.

I agree that Hook to Harwich is way cheaper - I have used it twice - but as I live 6 miles from North Shields, and it takes me 6 or 7 days to cycle to or from Harwich towing my trailer with my camping gear, I will have to pay DFDS's higher fares.

Ouch! Ijmuiden-'Newcastle' was ?76 solo-occupancy cabin, YHA discount last time I did it - but that was 2nd week in January 2008...

Yes - the 'low' season prices are always lower - I have also got a one-way trip to IJmuiden in May this year - two of us sharing a cabin - which comes to ?59 each.

Even more GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I am planning a holiday in Norway, but the Newcastle to Bergen ferry stopped running in September 2008. In fact there is no longer any ferry service to anywhere in Norway. The closest you'll get is Harwich to Esbjerg n Denmark.

Seat61.com suggests the Eurostar to Brussels, then Oslo via Cologne and Copenhagen, but I'm not that keen (or rich). I expect I'll just fly. Thanks a bunch DFDS.

While I'm here, another annoying thing is that many ferry websites (including DFDS) still have the defunct service in their service lists, interactive route maps, etc.

Ryanair fly to Norway from Newcastle and London Stansted.

DFDS do run a ferry from Immingham to Norway which also takes cars and motorbikes but priority is given to trucks and cabin availability is limited but it is worth talking to them.

There is (or was) a boat from from Vlisingen in Netherlands to Gotenburg in Sweden - I think it carried new cars but also took passengers and would carry cycles - the people who had their Trice tandem stolen (and recemore rencently recovered) used it.
