Electric Bikes & Household Insurance

We have just renewed our household insurance and included our bikes, but this year we have moved to a different and cheaper insurer. They are happy to cover the risk up to a maximum of ?2,500 for pedal cycles, but there is a condition attached. "An engine (of any kind) is NOT to be fitted to the machine" - I suppose this means I'll not be getting an electric assist again this year...My wife will surely smile!

Does anyone else have similar restrictions on their household policy?

Did you spot a typo on this page? I'll bet there is won...

Yes, I couldn't resist replying to your question. Have I 'won'? I did used to do some proof reading in last job.

I have just concluded a bout of conversations with "More Than" insurance.

(Please note the irony)

They were wanting ?38 for two bikes covered,- one of which is an electric bike.
The value of the cover was ?400..ie (200 each) and there would be a ?50 excess.

Needless to say I got a better deal with 'CycleGuard'

Hope this is helpful.

Is there any insurer who charges less than 10% of the value assured? My trikes would cost around £7000 to replace the pair. The last quote I got was £780/annum.

I did have them on my house insurance but they withdrew cover for anything over £2000. Needless to say I'm now paying 60% of my last years premium with a different insurer, AND the trikes are not insured.

Let's face it after 3 more years of no claims, if I include not paying a special cycle insurance premium and saving 40% on my home insurance I'll have saved the value of a trike.

So far I have had one trike for 4 years, the other for 3. I used to have lots of bikes (At one time I had nine!) in the last eleven years since I came back to cycling. Since being confined to three wheels I've sold all but my trikes although the total value hasn't fallen by much!

Number of claims? Zero. Money already saved? Enough to buy both trikes at today's prices. Plus they were all covered on my home insurance until this January anyway.

FWIW the ETA explicitly say they cover electric bikes:

I opted for separate e-bike insurance so that my bike would be covered against theft whilst at work. It was £93 for the year - and stated that the bike must be locked to an immovable object, using one of the locks listed on their terms and conditions page. My D-lock cost £52. This also covers it when locked to the wall in my garage. They did state that you don't have to lock it up if it is locked in a building with a 5-point locking door (e.g. a modern UPVC door), but who has one of those on their garage?!

The big let-down is that they do not cover the battery against theft, but I always remove it anyway.
