Hi all, just a note in case anyone hasn't spotted it... we now have an VV Advertiser Offers forum.

This is intended to run alongside the free classified ads forum which is for personal sales.

The new forum will allow Velo Vision's print advertisers a way to communicate direct with readers, promoting special offers, new products or business news. Keep an eye on it for bargains! As I write this the first offers have already appeared, and several other advertisers are also now set up to post there.

If you haven't already, click below to visit the Offers forum!

Just a note that I've enabled private messaging, which should help particularly on the adverts section.

Just click on a user's name - there'll then be a link to send a message. If you receive one, you'll get an email notification and there'll be a note on the forum pages too.

I've limited each user's total message count (i.e. inbox and sent messages) to 30 to keep our disk usage sane. If you end up with that many, you'll need to delete some before you can receive more.

These mesages are private between you and the recipient and even as administrator I don't have access to them.

If you get any spam or abusive messages please let me know and I will deal with it!

I'd argue that 60 minutes is too long for a session timeout, but then that's just me.

Obviously the cause was one of the cookies triggering a timeout in the code because of the server's clock drift. The fact that the server clock is out by nearly 90 minutes, recent clock changes notwithstanding, doesn't reflect particularly well on uklinux.net I'm afraid - it's not exactly difficult to set up a cron job that runs every hour to keep the clock in sync, especially as Linux on SMP systems tends to suffer from clock drift.

Admittedly, a server time problem is the last thing I'd have thought of ...

I have tried IE6 and IE8 beta and it don't work in either. It could be something to do with cookies, I set my IE to accept all cookies and security level to min and still not working.
At present, I'm stumped.
I've managed to reproduce the problem with various flavours of IE, and even Safari on the Mac(!) (but that could just be me, I hate Safari) and I've no idea what's going on.

I suspect that there may be a link with the 'critical' update that Micro$oft punted out over the weekend so I'm currently investigating that possibility. In the meantime, the best advice is to use another browser - it's not like there's no choice (Firefox, Opera, even Safari if you're feeling masochistic)

If I find a suitable remedy, it will be posted here.

UPDATE - this appears to be fixed - see last message in thread. If anyone has further problems, please let me know ASAP or post a message below.

Original message follows:

***
Hi everyone, we seem to be having problems with people unable to log in with MS Internet Explorer (the web browser which comes pre-intalled with Windows).

I've tried with a number of people's login details and it all works fine with Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari, but fails with IE. So I suspect it's just an IE problem.

This is preventing people posting small ads in the classifieds as well as general comments.

Any technical bods out there with ideas? I've contacted site programmer Simon...

As a temporary workaround, just use a non-IE web browser. Firefox is very good and free:

Apologies for any inconvenience...

Simple: just put in the URL, complete with the http : // www bit on the front (remove spaces), and it'll automagically be made active:

So http : // www.velovision.com with spaces removed gives:

http://www.velovision.com

There's also an alternative way: surround it with and
tags (no spaces):

http://www.velovision.com

Once you've deleted the spaces this creates a link:

http://www.velovision.com

and if you want to link some text, rather than the (automagically truncated) link address, use:

[ url=http://www.velovision.com ]The Velo Vision website

which, with spaces removed, gives:

The Velo Vision website

How to post images

There are three stages to posting an image:

First, make sure it's a sensible size and file size, and (usually) in JPG format. A good size to aim for is around 600 pixels wide, and under 100k in file size. If that confuses you, try e.g.

http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/digitalphotography/l/blprepforweb.htm

to read about some basics of image preparation. I've heard that Google Picasa:

http://picasa.google.co.uk/

is a good freebie image editor. Another less polished but very fast and effective one is Irfanview:

http://www.irfanview.com/

Then, once your image is the right size, you need to put it up on the web somewhere: often your ISP (Internet Service Provider, the people who provide your web connection) will have given you free space - see their instructions as to how to use it. Or, use a free photo hosting service such as one of the following:

http://www.photobucket.com/

http://www.smugmug.com/

http://www.flickr.com/

Finally, you need to put a link to that image in your post, surrounding it with and tags as follows:

http://www.velovision.co.uk/mag/issue16/covergrab16.jpg

I've added spaces before the final closing square brackets of the tags so you can see the code, not the image. The bit in the middle is the URL (=web address) of your image. To get this, get the image up on your web browser, right click and select 'properties'. The URL should be shown.

Remove the spaces in the tags and lo! It appears thus:

IMPORTANT: Please only link like this to images which you host or have put up on the web yourself. Linking direct to an image from a news site or the like is 'stealing' their bandwidth, without giving them the opportunity to show you photo credits, adverts or other things necessary for bill paying. If you want to show such things, put a normal, non-image link to the page containing it.

The Velo Vision discussion forum is for readers and potential readers to discuss anything vaguely bike or human power related.

******

The forum is open to everyone - you do not have to be a magazine subscriber to use it!

But to post a message you need to create an forum account, activate it, and then be logged in.

- First go to the 'register a new account' page and enter your details.

- The forum will then send you an automated e-mail message with instructions about how to activate your account (this step is necessary to help thwart spammers). Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a few minutes. If there's still no sign of it, email me (peter at velovision dot com) with details of your username and I'll activate the account manually.

- Once your account is activated you should be able to log in, post messages and use the other forum features.

- If you can't do so immediately it's probably because we're approving new users manually; a moderator will need to OK your account before it works. We do this when the spam attack levels get too tiresome to prevent malicious users getting onto the site. We check the site several times a day so it shouldn't take long.

You will be asked to log in again every few days, or whenever you access the forum from a different computer or web browser.
*******

I will moderate the forums with a light touch, and am generally not too bothered if discussion goes off-topic within reason. I will step in if it gets out of hand, or if there are any postings of dubious legality, personal attacks, obscenity or the like.

By using the board you agree to the conditions below.

You must be registered to post. The details you provide will be kept securely and not passed to any third parties, unless we are instructed to do so by a legal authority. Your IP address is recorded whenever you post.

Views expressed are the responsibility of the poster, and not of Velo Vision. They should comply with UK copyright, privacy and other applicable laws.

If you find a message which you feel is objectionable please email me: peter@velovision.com and I will take action as soon as I can.

Companies and organisations are welcome to promote their services in reply to questions or messages, but blatant advertising will be removed. This is necessary to support the paying advertisers who in turn support Velo Vision.

See other topics in this FAQ forum for help on the mechanics of using the board. If you have questions or comments on this, or suggestions for improvements, please use the main forum. This FAQ forum is read-only.

If you enjoy using this forum, and don't yet subscribe to Velo Vision magazine, please consider using the online shop to get yourself some great reading, and support this forum at the same time.
