Our 18 month old Core Duo running Ubuntu desktop is still spot on.

This machine runs FreeBSD and the time is always 20 seconds behind the Core Duo, it never varies!

I'd argue that 60 minutes is too long for a session timeout, but then that's just me.

Obviously the cause was one of the cookies triggering a timeout in the code because of the server's clock drift. The fact that the server clock is out by nearly 90 minutes, recent clock changes notwithstanding, doesn't reflect particularly well on uklinux.net I'm afraid - it's not exactly difficult to set up a cron job that runs every hour to keep the clock in sync, especially as Linux on SMP systems tends to suffer from clock drift.

Admittedly, a server time problem is the last thing I'd have thought of ...

Just looking at it now, it seems the problem is related to a cookie. Firefox is sending two cookies when requesting this page, one called "phorum_session_v5" and another called "phorum_session_st", IE on the other hand is only sending the first cookie, the second is not in the request packet. It is likely the absence of this second cookie is causing the problems.

Hmmm, that is strange, browser compatibility problems are normally related to JavaScript but I can see this site does not use JS so cannot be that. I have tried IE6 and IE8 beta and it don't work in either. Something strange I have noticed is that the page seems to start with a tag, there is no DOCTYPE or tags which are what should normally come first in a webpage. It could be something to do with cookies, I set my IE to accept all cookies and security level to min and still not working. When I got more time I will get my packet sniffer out and see what IE is sending to the server verses what firefox is sending.

At present, I'm stumped.
I've managed to reproduce the problem with various flavours of IE, and even Safari on the Mac(!) (but that could just be me, I hate Safari) and I've no idea what's going on.

I suspect that there may be a link with the 'critical' update that Micro$oft punted out over the weekend so I'm currently investigating that possibility. In the meantime, the best advice is to use another browser - it's not like there's no choice (Firefox, Opera, even Safari if you're feeling masochistic)

If I find a suitable remedy, it will be posted here.

UPDATE - this appears to be fixed - see last message in thread. If anyone has further problems, please let me know ASAP or post a message below.

Original message follows:

***
Hi everyone, we seem to be having problems with people unable to log in with MS Internet Explorer (the web browser which comes pre-intalled with Windows).

I've tried with a number of people's login details and it all works fine with Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari, but fails with IE. So I suspect it's just an IE problem.

This is preventing people posting small ads in the classifieds as well as general comments.

Any technical bods out there with ideas? I've contacted site programmer Simon...

As a temporary workaround, just use a non-IE web browser. Firefox is very good and free:

Apologies for any inconvenience...
