For a wheel I shopped at a shop miles from where I live in Dronfield. It had 48 spokes and was great.I cost a lot.

i stopped shopping at local shops cos They didnt sever me, They were RUBBISH.

Nowadays all me stuff comes from shops that are miles away. My recumbents, Surly touring bikes and folding bikes, and all the stuff that goes with it.

I even got a Brass bell from a shop in Germany cos that was the first one that came in a the Google search.

I went to a chain (!), the prices were well in excess of what is on the web and the advice and service were not matched from what I could find out. A mention of Sturmey Archer brought them out in screaming ab dabs.Same at our local independant where I was presented with wallet emptying goods.
I suppose they're ok if you're getting a new bike for a child or want something cheap and quick like a cable . Both shops were unable to build or true wheels and said they would have to be sent away, aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!

I regularly use a cycle path along a local river. It's about four miles long and is used by cyclists, walkers, doggy people, joggers and fishermen. It's a great ride well away from traffic. The problems arise when I approach walkers from behind as they are in a world of their own and completely unaware of what's going on around them. Many are on the mobile 'phone or have earphones in so cannot hear by bell. Those with dogs seem unable to control the things and I've had several near misses. I always slow down when overtaking walkers as a bicycle can startle someone who is not paying attention. If I'm riding into a head wind the sound of my bell will be blown behind me so those up front may not hear it.

I've also had the person on the right moving to the left and vice-verse. I once asked two senior ladies who did that if they would care to dance and we had a laugh about it. I believe that pedestrians should always have priority as they were invented first! It's no trouble to slow down and even give way to others. A friendly greeting goes a long way to avoiding possible conflict.

Got home tapped the car, the bike and had a look in the mirror ( yer, I know ).all seems present and visible , made me think that on cycle tracks/ trails folk don't keep to the left or get out of the way.
I also stuck my ear close to the bell and rang it, yep deaf inately present.
Folk seem to keep to their right when progressing, which is my left.

Best one I've ever had was a jogger who ended up leaping out of my way and rolling down an embankment. Shouldn't have burst out laughing .
Any more invisible riders out there ?

When I came out my seat had been odone and would have been taken by those horrid kids across the road if I hadnt got a lock on it holding it to my rear carrier.

Why we should have guns.
