Hi All,

Very late posting but I was the successful bidder for the Berkut.

I have an custom ICE Micro (best Summer Trike), a steel Kett-Wiesel (Winter Hack Trike) and an electric assist Aluminium Kett-Wiesel but I have always lusted after one of these Russian front wheel drive, front wheel steer monsters. I have had an Alleweder velomobile in the past and thought the Berkut might be a good starting point for a home-built velombile - simple short drive train all at the front and a wide track.

Went up to collect it with much trepidation as to it's condition.

Very relieved to find that all the custom titanium bits were in good order with nothing obviously broken or damaged. Both freewheel hubs work fine, drive shaft universal joints etc are fine

It was very badly set-up and the previous owner didn't seem to know about mechanical things in general so I spent the first 20 mins going over the trike tightening up loads of allen screws and nuts which were ridiculously loose, putting air into the tubes etc so that I could, at least, ride it.

I then had a couple of trips around the block and bought it.

The hydraulic brakes are not up to a proper shake down ride yet because there appears to be no hydraulic fluid in the front brakes leaving just the rear brake which isn't too efective on it's own but it seems sound!

My initial impressions are:-

The steering is very lively and I find it rather twitchy but this may well be because of my pedalling style.

Lovely short and rigid drive train.

Seat much too narrow for me - feels more like riding on the saddle of an upwrong rather than in the carbon fibre rigid seat of my ICE Micro or the webbing seat of my Kett-Weisels. It feels like I am about to fall off the side of the seat and I think I will need to change the seat? or add 1/2 horizontal hoops at kidney/chest level to give some sideways support.

Much wider than my other trikes so not so good for going through doorways but this might well help re velomobile mods.

Looks pig ugly - only it's mother could love it. Might help deter bike thieves? lol.

My trouble is that I have not found any spare time to get on with this project - too busy riding my other bikes and trikes.

SO.........

I will consider selling it on now for what I paid for it (£600 ono)

OR.......

If it doesn't sell I shall sort out the brakes, seat etc over the summer then have a go at a body for it next winter as a garage project.

Any interest out there???

Will post some photos soon.

Again with mixed feelings, I must report that the Zenit offered for sale is now en route to its new owner.

The buyer claims (and I have no reason to doubt) that he was among those who placed a deposit on a Zenit in the waning days of ASE... and was stiffed.

I was pleased the trike could go to someone 'with credentials'.

Hi Trin,

No, unfortunately there's no supply of any parts for any of these trikes :-(

I don't know the thread details off-hand, but it should be easy for a machinist to measure from a sample. It will be a metric (millimetre) pitch for sure. I'd rather not disassemble mine to measure it but let me know if it is necessary and I'll see what I can do.

ISTR I also have an old broken one somewhere, which I'll be able to measure easily if I can find it...

Dear Peter,
If indeed I will have to get this nut machined, I need to know the thread size/pitch. Could you supply me with that information ? Although apparently an "A S" nut would work. I guess they are in no more supply than the Berkut original ?
Below I tried to include your message & picture of your axle/nut on previous message. Having not given up hope that someone could possibly help in this dilemma.

On mine the original drive shaft nut looks like this:

Good luck! I don't know of anyone with a stash of spares for any of these trikes - anyone with parts will likely be hanging onto the spares for themselves! But worth a try!

I suspect you'll have to end up going down the machining path. If you do, it might be worth getting a few spares made at the same time to sell (here or elsewhere) to other owners, as well as for your own future use. Likely a lot of the cost will be in the set-up, so making a few more once that's done won't add too much.

Not many Berkut owners have announced their presence on here so far unfortunately but there may be lurkers...

Cheers!

Sorry about the delay in responding, Thanks for the info on right side nut removal. Yes, The nut does look just as your original nut looks as in your top picture(the one w/snap ring & allen head shown). I did hear back from Berkut , rather amusing.
  " Thanks for your letter.
Unfortunately, we Trike temporarily are not made.

The design has been changed (the photo) see.
All than I can help you is a drawing from archive.
And to tell that on the right – the right carving. And with at the left – the left carving.
I sincerely wish you success.

The ,"Last Century " business was a nice touch.
So, my quest goes on. I emailed the guy I bought it from in hopes he would be able to tell me where he got the trike. No response as of yet. I am still in hopes of some sort of lead from this thread.
I do not live in England. I am an Illinois (USA) resident, and will pursue the machining of a nut if all else fails.

Just had a thought - by 'axle nut' do you mean the 'hub cap' which screws into the wheel (as per my instructions to hold the rim, above) or the toothed nut on the drive shaft end, inside the hub when assembled?

On mine the original drive shaft nut looks like this:

Those are relatively simple to machine from solid if no spares are forthcoming. Ideally you'd make it (or have it made) from some steel capable of being hardened by heat treatment, but as a quick fix I made a replacement from stainless steel, and it held up reasonably well for a while:

Hi Trin,

I've put your post into a new thread and given it a title - more chance it'll get noticed.

Certainly first option is to contact Berkut, as you have:

http://www.berkut-trikes.com/en_index.html

I last heard from them just over two years ago:

http://www.velovision.com/forum-new/read.php?6,5812

They said they may still have some spares. Please do post again if they reply positively!

Otherwise, not sure what to suggest - might be a question of getting a new one made. If you are in the UK I can suggest some names of engineers who might take on such a job, if so. For this, a drawing or a sample to copy would be needed (chances are a right-hand nut could be copied, with threads and features reversed for left-hand use...)

To extract the right-hand axle nut, if it's the part I think it is, and assuming Berkut trikes work similarly to my AS one, simply turn it in the direction that would turn the wheel backwards (while holding the wheel rim still) and it should unscrew. So that should be anticlockwise as you look onto the right and axle end.

Good luck!

With some considerable regret...

I am offering a very nice ASE Zenit L for sale in the States. The trike is located in the upper mid-west... Wisconsin to be specific.

(Trike has sold... as of January 16, 2012)

In brief, though I remain enamored of the trike and the engineering behind it, the Zenit is simply not best suited for my needs.

Thanks.

Peter B.

I duuno really - there's certainly the extra drag of a further chain running over two sprockets and through a tensioner... but it's more I think that having that chain to the rear rather (to my mind) defeats the elegance of the front-wheel-drive design.

And while the wheel slip you get with 'just' front drive is occasionally irksome it's not something that 'needs fixing' IMO, for UK on-road use at least (the Russians with rather more snowy days may have a different view!).

Hi all,

Got my S-327 back from being fixed by Mike Burrows - pics soon!

Meanwhile I happened to check out

http://www.trikes.ru

and noticed they've made a few changes - they seem to be actively back in business selling bike trailers which fold up for back-pack style carrying. A bit of machine translation helps (the new stuff is only on the Russian-language version of the site I think):

http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Ftrike.ru%2Four_models.php

Also note that with regards to the latest 3x3 trike they say

"STATUS: We are looking for investors for further development and launch of a series"...

Here's hoping they can find some funding! They also mention in the text that a disk brake version of the trike may be possible...

And a version (or option) I'd quite like to see is a 2WD machine with a double-sided rear fork so that it can be made 3x3 using an electric assist motor...

Thanks Peter, I hadn't thought about getting another trike manufacturers mud guards and adapting them.

I had put some thought to making a mould and producing some grp mudguards, but I'll have a look round first.

Nothing really springs to mind :-(

You'll have seen my old ones:

You may just have to get some random 20" mudguards and make mountings yourself.

It's possible a neater job might be achieved by getting front 'guards from e.g. ICE and modifying them... best check dimensions carefully before laying down cash though...
